CUSTOM CAR BUILDS IN BROWARD COUNTY:
ENGINES AND DRIVETRAIN.

Engine swaps, forced induction, drivetrain, and fitment. How we scope a build in the right order, which supporting systems decide whether it holds together, and what we need from you before anything comes apart.

Custom car builds in Broward County almost always come down to three directions: swapping in a different engine, adding forced induction to the engine that is already there, or reworking the drivetrain and fitment around either one. A build is a planned sequence of modifications, not a parts list, and the order the work happens in is what decides whether the finished car is reliable or permanently half-done.

Below is how our technicians scope a build, which supporting systems decide whether it holds together, what moves the cost, and what we need from you before anything comes apart. We work on all makes and models except Lamborghini and Ferrari, and build work sits alongside paint, body, interior, and mechanical repair under one roof.

01What is a custom car build, and what does it involve?

A build starts with a goal stated in plain terms, not a part number. A street car that idles in traffic on Griffin Road is a different project from one that only ever sees a track, and the same engine can be right for one and wrong for the other.

From the goal we work backwards. The engine decision sets the cooling, fuel, and exhaust requirements. Those set what the drivetrain has to survive. The drivetrain sets what the brakes, wheels, and tires need to be. Working forwards instead, buying the headline part first and solving the rest later, is how a car ends up with an engine it cannot cool and a clutch it cannot hold.

02Which custom builds does AutoGenX take on?

Most of what comes through the shop sits in one of the directions below, and many builds combine two or three. That is where planning earns its keep, because each direction brings work owners rarely account for at the start.

Build directionWhat it changesWhat it brings with it
Engine swapA different engine family in the bayMounts and crossmember, wiring and engine management, cooling, exhaust routing, driveshaft and axles
Forced inductionMore air into the engine you already haveFuel delivery, intercooling, oil feed and drain, gasket and internal limits, tuning
Naturally aspirated power workHeads, camshafts, intake, exhaustValve train clearance, tuning, exhaust fabrication, idle quality
Drivetrain upgradeClutch, axles, differential, driveshaftGearing choice, driveline angles, transmission cooling, traction
Cooling and oilingRadiator, oil cooler, air routingHose and duct routing, fan control wiring, fluid capacity, hood clearance
Brake upgradeLarger rotors and calipersWheel clearance, pedal feel and master cylinder sizing, line fitment, front-to-rear bias
Ride height, wheels, tiresHow the car sits and what fills the archesAlignment afterward, driveline angles, rub and bump clearance, speedometer calibration

The right-hand column is the part people underestimate. A turbo is not a turbo installation; it is a fuel, heat, and tuning project with a turbo in the middle of it. Ride height and wheel changes are the clearest example of the same principle, because the alignment that follows is part of the job rather than an optional extra.

03How do you plan an engine swap or forced induction?

An engine swap is a fabrication and integration project before it is a performance one. The engine has to physically fit, the mounts have to locate it correctly, the wiring and engine management have to talk to the rest of the car, and the cooling and exhaust have to be routed rather than wished into place. If your engine is simply worn out and the car is otherwise right, a swap is the wrong tool for that job, and our guide to engine replacement in Fort Lauderdale covers that decision instead.

Forced induction keeps the engine and changes what goes into it. The limiting factor is almost never the turbo or the supercharger itself; it is fuel delivery, heat, and whether the internals and head gasket are happy at the pressure you are asking for. We would rather build to a conservative target that lasts than a headline number that does not.

Thinking about a build?

Tell us the goal and a budget range and we will scope the whole sequence, in order, before anything comes apart. The quote form is the fastest first step and we will come back with questions.

04What affects the cost of custom car builds in Broward County?

There is no single figure here, and we will not invent one before the car is on the lift. What actually moves it:

  • How far the goal sits from stock, since a bolt-on package and a swap are different orders of magnitude
  • Whether parts exist as a kit for your exact chassis or have to be adapted
  • Fabrication time for mounts, brackets, intercooler piping, and exhaust
  • Wiring and engine management, often the largest single line on a swap
  • The supporting systems the goal forces: fuel, cooling, clutch, axles, brakes
  • Corrosion and prior work found once the drivetrain and panels come out
  • Tuning time, and how many sessions the combination needs before it is right

We scope it in stages and put the estimate in writing, so you can decide where to stop.

05Why do supporting systems decide whether a build lasts?

Almost every unhappy build we see failed in a supporting system rather than the headline part. The turbo was fine; the fuel pump could not keep up. The swapped engine was fine; the radiator was sized for the engine that left.

South Florida sharpens this. Heat and humidity are constant, and a cooling or oiling package that is adequate in a dry climate is marginal here in late-summer traffic. We size cooling, oiling, and fuel for the worst day the car will actually see, not the average one.

06What changes on European, German, and diesel builds?

Most of our build work is on domestic cars and trucks, where parts support is deepest and the aftermarket has already solved the hard integration problems.

European vehicles and German platforms are a different exercise. The engine management is more tightly integrated, modules expect to see the components they left the factory with, and a mechanical change usually needs a software change beside it. Clearances are tighter, so fabrication replaces off-the-shelf kits more often than owners expect.

Diesel builds carry their own set of constraints around turbo sizing, fuel delivery, and emissions equipment, which we repair rather than remove. Our diesel repair guide covers that ground in detail.

Emissions law applies to all of them. The EPA states plainly that federal law prohibits removing or rendering inoperative an emissions device or element of design the manufacturer installed, and also notes that the agency does not approve or certify aftermarket retrofit devices, so a part being sold for your car is not the same thing as a part being legal on it.

07How long does a custom build take?

A custom build is not a same-day repair the way most mechanical work is, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing. The schedule is driven by parts lead times, fabrication, and tuning rather than by shop hours, so we give it to you in stages instead of one optimistic date.

If the build follows an accident, the repair side is documented for your insurer the same way we handle collision work, and the modification side is quoted separately so the two do not get tangled together.

What to bring to the first conversation

  • The goal in plain words, and how the car actually gets used
  • A budget range you are comfortable working inside
  • Any parts you already own, with part numbers if you have them
  • Everything the car has had done to it already, including work done elsewhere

Custom Car Builds FAQ

Do you work from a plan I already have, or do you build the plan?

Either one. If you arrive with a parts list, we go through it against your goal and tell you what is missing or mismatched before you spend anything. With only a goal, we scope the sequence from there.

Will a modified car still be street legal in Florida?

Florida runs no statewide emissions or safety inspection for private passenger vehicles, but federal emissions law still applies and state rules on lighting, ride height, glazing, and exhaust noise do too. We do not remove or disable emissions equipment on any build.

Can a build be done in stages so the cost is spread out?

Yes, and it is usually the better way to do it. We sequence the work so every stage ends with a car you can drive, and so earlier stages never have to be undone to make room for later ones.

Do I need an appointment to talk about a build?

No. Walk-ins are welcome and appointments are available, though a build conversation goes faster if you send the goal through the quote form first so we have it in front of us.

GOT A BUILD IN MIND?
